Sub : Dravidian Politics-1.

1. Introduction :

Politics in Tamil Nadu is dominated by Dravidian parties, namely, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam from 1967 when the DMK first came to power. Congress party is the third largest party, which was ruling the state from independence till 1963.

Dravidian movement was started as a platform to eradicate the social inequalities, women empowerment, improvement of lower classes and downtrodden and also to ascertain the self respect of the locals. Initially it was led by E.V.R. Ramasamy, fondly called as Periyar and was functioning as a non political movement.

2.  Periyar :

Periyar described the movement as “Arivu Viduthalai Iyakkam’’.

The main principles of the Self-Respect Movement in society were to be:

No kind of inequality among people.
No difference such as rich and poor in economic life;
Men and women to be treated as equals in every respect without differences;
Attachments to caste, religion, varna and country to be eradicated from society with a prevalent friendship and unity around the world with every human being seeking to act according to reason, understanding, desire, and perspective, and shall not be subject to slavery of any kind or manner.
The two major concepts of Self-Respect Movement were Anti-Brahmanism and Self-Respect Marriages.

3. Anti-Brahminism:

In the early 20th century, criticism against Brahmanism came within various sections of Brahmin and other Hindu communities who were part of nationalist and rationalist movement. By the 1850’s Tamil and Telugu Brahmins comprising only 3.2% of the population began to increase their political power by filling most of the jobs which were open to Indian men at that time.They dominated the administrative services and the newly created urban professions. It was proposed to give opportunities to Non-Brahmins in all the sectors.

4. Anti-Brahmanism became organized in the formation of the Justice Party.
