In Tamil Nadu, this failure is due to dishonesty, corruption, one-man show, family/dynastic rule and many more .... no difference than other parties, DK, DMK, AIADMK all like others, nothing special to mention ..

In Maharashtra, by the 1930s, the non- Brahman movement as a whole was absorbed into the Congress, with only Ambedkar leading an independent Dalit movement which saw itself as carrying on the heritage of Phule but was limited organisationally to the Dalits (and, among them, to the Mahars).

In Tamil Nadu, on the other hand, Periyar's movement took on full force in the 1930s and 1940s, gathered people of all castes around it, made the commitment to women's liberation more of a mass force than Phule could, organised powerful mass campaigns against religious superstition and rather than vanishing into the ``mainstream,'' went on to found its own …

A small instance: In the thirties, when the Master had just settled at Ananda Kutir and was living on rations—mostly rotis and a little rice—from the Rishikesh Kalikambliwala Kshettar, a forest ranger from the South came to stay with him. The ranger was not accustomed to wheat diet, and so the Master and his disciples gave all their rice to him. After eating all that the guest still felt hungry.

The Master went to the jungle and came back with some big bael fruit in hand. The forest ranger could not eat the fruit. He said it was tasteless. Undaunted, the Master brought sugar from the kitchen and, asking the guest to try the fruit with the sugar, quoted a Tamil proverb: "Chakkarai pottal kambaliyum thinnalam—when mixed with sugar even wool is edible!"

In 1950, on a visit to Dehra Dun, the Master went to the teachers’ quarters in the Mahadevi Kanya Pathasala. Seeing some bundles on the table he asked one of the teachers, "What are those? Answer papers? Yo…

In Maharashtra also, militant non-Brahmans feel that ``Phule has failed.'' Militant Dalits discuss the reasons for the stagnation of their movement.

There is widespread malaise.

The spirit of the movement still exists, there are still activists committed to the cause but the public and political life of society, whether at a local level, where so many villages still maintain separate wells and separate drinking cups for the Dalits, or at the State or all-India level has not been transformed in the areas where the non-Brahman movements were the strongest.
2.2
In Tamil Nadu, the heights of corruption have been reached with a party calling itself ``Dravidian,'' while the major Dravidian parties are forming an alliance with the Congress  at the centre.

In Maharashtra, for all its progressive traditions, one of the most ferocious forms of corruption that Con…

DRAVIDIAN AND CINEMA POLITICS A GREAT FAILURE

Failed Movements :

Part 1.

1.1

" SO MANY movements have failed. In Tamil Nadu there was a movement in the name of anti-Brahmanism under the leadership of Periyar. It attracted Dalits, but after 30 years of power, the Dalits understand that they are as badly-off - or worse-off - as they were under the Brahmans. Under Dravidian rule, they have been attacked and killed, their due share in government service is not given, they are not allowed to rise.''

TAMILNADU NEEDS HONEST, SINCERE LEADERS, NOT THE ABOVE

1.2.
So says Dr. Krishnasami, leader of the militant movement of the Dalit community known as ``Devendra Kula Vellalas'' of southern Tamil Nadu and founder of a new political party, Puthiya Tamilakam. This sense of disillusionment with the Dravidian parties is pervasive among not only the Dali…

1.Caste in Tamil Nadu politics :
The Dravidian movement visualised a casteless society. However, political pursuits have encouraged both parties to build caste-based vote banks.

Tamil Nadu politics is dominated by a few castes, mainly the Chettiars, Thevars, Nadars, Mudaliyars, Gounders and the Vanniyars.

Except for the Chettiars – a forward caste, most of the other politically powerful castes are classified Backward Castes (BC).

Both Dravidian parties pin their electoral hopes on BCs who constitute 68% of the population.

While Thevars are generally considered a traditional AIADMK vote-bank, other caste vote-banks have straddled the political spectrum.

There are few prominent caste-centric parties like the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), which represents the Vanniyars, and the Vidhuthalai Chirutigal Katchi (VCK) – a Dalit party.

These parties, however, have only been at the periphery …

Karunanidhi's hatred towards MGR :

Annadurai loved MGR then anybody, but  Karunanithi was not, only pretended, because of Arignar Karunanidhi didn't had any voice against MGR

4.1
Karunanidhi made several attempts to weaken MGR's position within the party. MGR retaliated with corruption charges and a call for a boycott of the party's General Council. DMK’s General Council suspended MGR from the party stating that he had involved himself in "anti party activities". Although MGR had lost support from top-ranking leaders within the DMK, the strong public reaction following his suspension demonstrated his popular support within the party's volunteers.

4.2
Inspired by this support from the party's lower cadres and his fans, MGR launched his own party, Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK, Anna DMK named after Annadurai: Anna was his nickname)

7.Formation of DMK and ADMK:

After the defeat of Justice Party in elections of 1937 it sought help from Periyar and he changed it to Dravidar Kazhagam. He decided not to involve in politics which would lead to compromise his principles and so he withdrew it from parliamentary politics.

Birth of DMK:

7.2
In 1947, when India attained independence, Periyar called for members of the Dravidar Kazhagam to boycott the celebrations. According to him, the Indian National Congress was dominated by Brahmins. He predicted that an independent India would bring South Indians, especially Tamils, under the dominance of Brahmins and North Indians.

In other words, according to Periyar, independence would lead to the replacement of British dominance with Brahmin and North Indian dominance. He felt an independent nation called Dravida Nadu for…

5. Justice Party :

5.1

The Justice Party, officially the South Indian Liberal Foundation was a political party in the Madras Presidency of British India.

It was established in 1916 by T.M.Nair and P. Theagaraya Chetty.

This party, composed of upper-class non-Brahmins who were typically feudal castes, land-owning agricultural castes and merchant castes and was committed to enhancing the opportunities for non-Brahmins.

5.2

It formed four out of the five ministries and was in power for thirteen years from 1920.

But after it was defeated by Indian National Congress it came under the leadership of Periyar and his Self-Respect Movement.

In 1944, Periyar transformed the Justice Party into the social organisation Dravidar Kazhagam and withdrew it from electoral politics.

5.3

Justice party focused on removing Brahmins from the hig…

1. Introduction :

Politics in Tamil Nadu is dominated by Dravidian parties, namely, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam from 1967 when the DMK first came to power. Congress party is the third largest party, which was ruling the state from independence till 1963.

Dravidian movement was started as a platform to eradicate the social inequalities, women empowerment, improvement of lower classes and downtrodden and also to ascertain the self respect of the locals. Initially it was led by E.V.R. Ramasamy, fondly called as Periyar and was functioning as a non political movement.

2.  Periyar :

Periyar described the movement as “Arivu Viduthalai Iyakkam’’.

The main principles of the Self-Respect Movement in society were to be:

No kind of inequality among people.
No difference such as rich and poor in economic life;
Men and women t…

1. Introduction:

1.1
In the vibrant politics of Tamil Nadu, she has always had a unique persona. She's been somewhat of an enigma too. Imperious by nature, impervious to flak and projected as the Puratchi Thalaivi (revolutionary leader), former chief minister J. Jayalalitha seemed above the law.

Till its long arm reached out to arrest her for abuse of authority and malfeasance last fortnight. From her palatial bungalow in Poes Garden to her rat and mosquito infested cell in the Madras Central Jail by the Cooum river, the fall from grace was as dizzying as it was dramatic. Nemesis did not creep up on Jayalalitha. It caught ho…
